Moldova Recalls Ambassador After Combat Drone Explodes on Its Territory

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova announced on August 10 that it is recalling its ambassador to Russia from Moscow for consultations.
In a statement published on Telegram, Moldovan foreign ministry officials condemned the event, stating it serves as a gross violation of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity that creates a threat to the lives of citizens.

The decision follows the crash and explosion of a combat drone at a height of about 2.5 meters in the southern village of Krokmaz, located in the Stefan Voda district.
The incident, which began unfolding on the afternoon of August 9 when local residents heard a powerful blast, marks the first time an aircraft of this specific type has been recorded on Moldovan territory.
The ministry emphasized that Moldova condemns Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and its negative impacts on regional security.
According to police, the combat drone crashed into a tree and exploded about 2.5 meters off the ground.
The force of the detonation scattered debris over a significant distance, resulting in physical damage to the roofs and outbuildings of several residential homes.
Information regarding the powerful blast near Krokmaz first emerged on August 9. Following the explosion, the Stefan Voda district council released photos showing an object resembling a drone that had landed on the outskirts of the village.
On March 17, 2026, Moldovan authorities discovered a drone carrying an active explosive charge in a field near the village of Tudora, roughly 500 meters from the border with Ukraine.
Local residents alerted law enforcement to the suspicious object, prompting emergency responders and bomb disposal specialists to evacuate nearby areas and prepare for a controlled detonation.
Border guards reported that the unmanned aerial vehicle had briefly entered Moldovan airspace during the night, leading Moldova’s Foreign Ministry to strongly condemn the incident as a breach of national sovereignty and a threat to public safety.
