Authorities in Moldova have discovered a Russian-made Gerbera drone near the village of Sofia in the Drochia district, located close to the country’s northern border with Ukraine.

The drone was recovered on February 6 and is under investigation by Moldovan police and technical explosive experts.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, the incident is considered a likely violation of national airspace.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova strongly condemns any incident that may constitute a breach of the country’s airspace and a potential threat to the safety of its citizens,” the ministry said.

Police cordoned off the area and confirmed that the drone did not contain any explosives. The authorities urged residents to avoid contact with unknown objects and to notify emergency services immediately if they encounter suspicious devices.

“We urge citizens not to approach such objects and to immediately inform the authorities via the national emergency hotline,” Moldovan police said in an official statement.

The foreign ministry reiterated Moldova’s commitment to “the protection of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens,” and noted that the situation remains under close monitoring in coordination with national security institutions.

Earlier, Moldova summoned Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after several Russian-made Gerbera drones were detected flying through Moldovan airspace during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine in November 2025.

According to NewsMaker, Moldovan authorities presented one of the recovered drones to the ambassador and handed over a formal protest note, describing the incident as an illegal violation of the country’s airspace and a threat to national and regional security.
