Russian Gerbera Drone Found on Moldovan Lake Shore, Triggering Security Alert

A Russian-made drone was discovered on the morning of January 17 near a lake in Moldova’s Telenești district, prompting an official response from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Authorities identified the unmanned aerial vehicle as a Geran-type model, previously found on Moldovan territory.
According to NewsMaker, the drone was located by a local hunter who alerted law enforcement after encountering the aircraft on the lakeshore. Moldova’s General Inspectorate of Police confirmed that the drone measured approximately 2.5 meters in length and was not carrying any explosives.
In a statement cited by NewsMaker, Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the incident a threat to national security and a violation of the country’s sovereignty. “The Republic of Moldova condemns such violations and the aggressive war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which also threatens the safety of our citizens,” the ministry said.
In its official statement, the Foreign Ministry added: “Given these risks, the Republic of Moldova will continue investing in peace and security to protect the country and ensure the safety of its citizens.”
Authorities have not indicated whether the drone entered Moldovan airspace intentionally or as the result of a malfunction. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Earlier, a similar incident was reported in Moldova’s Sângerei region, where a local farmer discovered a Russian drone in his field, removed its engine, and transported the aircraft on a motorized cart to the village mayor, according to Euronews Romania correspondent Vitalie Cojocari on December 3. Authorities were later alerted due to concerns over potential danger.
