Sweden Considers Entry Restrictions for Russian and Belarusian Athletes

Sweden is exploring legal grounds to refuse visas for Russian and Belarusian athletes aiming to compete in international sporting events held within its borders.

Swedish Minister for Migration Johan Forssell confirmed on October 21 that the government is evaluating measures that could prevent neutral-status competitors from entering the country for major upcoming events, including next year’s World Ski Championships in Falun, as reported by Reuters.

“We are currently analyzing the legal grounds on which visa applications from Russian and Belarusian athletes can be rejected. The Swedish government is firmly critical of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions,” Forssell stated.

The government’s stance aligns with position papers issued by the Swedish Ski Association and the Swedish Sports Confederation, both of which advocate against allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete on Swedish soil.

Swedish officials expressed concern that permitting these individuals to perform publicly could understate the severity of ongoing military actions and international violations.

“There is an obvious risk that this could lead to the normalization of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” the minister added, Reuters reported.

During the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, several international biathletes from Sweden, Norway, France, Finland, and Italy publicly expressed their solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The athletes shared their support after Ukraine’s mixed relay team secured a top-8 finish on the opening day of the biathlon events.

Recognizing the severe challenges Ukrainians faced due to widespread power outages caused by Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, the competitors voiced their hopes for peace and emphasized that the global biathlon community stood with Ukraine during those difficult circumstances.
