Trump Rejects Zelenskyy’s Patriot Request as Ukraine’s Air Defenses Missed All 28 Russian Missiles

US President Donald Trump rejected a personal request from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for several hundred additional Patriot interceptor missiles, citing depleted American stockpiles and growing defense needs in the Middle East, the Financial Times reported on August 5.
According to people familiar with the meeting, Zelenskyy raised the request during talks in the Oval Office on July 28. Trump reportedly made clear that Washington would not provide the missiles.

The US President told Zelenskyy that American stocks were limited and that the interceptors were needed to protect US facilities in the Middle East and Gulf states amid the war with Iran, the sources said.
The reported refusal has drawn renewed attention following Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine on August 5, when Ukrainian air defenses were unable to intercept any of the 28 missiles launched.
The barrage included 24 ballistic missiles and four Zircon or Onyx missiles, alongside 115 drones. Seventeen people were killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region, while dozens more were injured.
Patriot systems are among the few air defense platforms available to Ukraine that can intercept high-speed ballistic missiles. Kyiv has repeatedly warned that limited supplies of interceptors leave Ukrainian cities exposed to increasingly heavy Russian attacks.
Following the latest strike, Zelenskyy urged allies either to accelerate missile deliveries or impose new sanctions on Russia’s ballistic missile industry.

“Partners who are not ready to help more actively with interceptor deliveries right now can help through new sanctions measures,” Zelenskyy said. “A significant part of Russia’s ballistic missile production is not under sanctions. Still.”
He called for further action from the G7, the European Union, and other countries supporting Ukraine’s defense, arguing that delays in providing anti-ballistic weapons directly contribute to civilian deaths and destruction.
Earlier, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that a long-term agreement on the joint production of Patriot interceptor missiles with Ukraine is unlikely to be reached before winter.
