US Long-Range Missile Stockpiles Running Low After Months of War With Iran

The United States Army has nearly depleted its stockpiles of long-range precision surface-to-surface missiles, specifically the ATACMS and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) systems, following five months of military operations against Iran.
The situation has raised concerns among officials that reduced stockpiles could limit the ability of the United States to deter Russia and China, according to Reuters on August 4.

The ATACMS system provides a strike range of up to 300 kilometers, while the newer PrSM family of ballistic missiles, developed by Lockheed Martin, extends engagement capability to 500 kilometers. The military is gradually phasing out older ATACMS inventory as PrSM production ramps up.
However, PrSM stocks remain limited because the system entered service recently. A major order for PrSM is set for 2027, with plans to reach an annual production target of 400 units.
In response to inquiries regarding missile levels, the White House released a statement from President Donald Trump.
In the statement, Trump asserted that the United States possesses "far more ammunition than anyone in the world" and "far more than needed." He added, "Our defense companies are currently producing more ammunition than ever before, expanding production capabilities, and upgrading equipment at record rates.

"Despite these statements, ground forces have used up nearly all pre-war supplies of surface-to-surface missiles in the Middle East, requiring partial replenishment from reserves stationed in other regions.
The reliance on long-range surface missiles stems from an administrative decision to minimize high-risk operations involving piloted aircraft. Defense analysts emphasize that such capabilities are critical when confronting opponents equipped with advanced air defense networks, including China.
Earlier reports also indicated declining reserves of Patriot and THAAD air defense interceptors within the US military.

On March 7, 2026, Ukrainian forces conducted a coordinated high-precision strike targeting a key Russian drone facility at Donetsk International Airport.
Executed by the Missile Forces and Artillery alongside the Ukrainian Air Force, the operation utilized US-supplied ATACMS ballistic missiles and French-British SCALP cruise missiles to hit a site used for storing, preparing, and launching Shahed-type strike UAVs, resulting in heavy smoke visible over the airfield following the impact.
