Polish authorities deployed additional police, counterterrorism units, and border guards to the country’s frontier with Russia’s Kaliningrad region after intelligence warned of possible sabotage or an armed provocation, RMF24 reported on November 3.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Polish and allied services had warned that acts of sabotage or more serious provocations could occur along the border with Russia in early November.

Poland had already launched a special security operation along the Kaliningrad border on November 2 after Polish and allied intelligence warned of possible armed incursions and sabotage.

“After receiving more precise information that incidents could occur in the first half of November, including armed people entering Polish territory, we decided to send substantial police forces, counterterrorism units, and reinforce the Border Guard,” Tusk stated.

He added that shortly after midnight, the Border Guard reported “disturbing movement” along the Polish-Russian border involving “individuals with flashlights.”

“We very quickly mobilized the appropriate forces and resources there, and managed to prevent a provocation,” Tusk stated.

According to RMF24, Polish services intervened near Sępopol in the Warmian-Masurian region. No one crossed into Polish territory, and the observed individuals withdrew deeper into the Kaliningrad region.

Tusk noted that the incident did not result in any serious consequences but warned that Russian pressure could continue.

“It is not the case that we avoided some tragic events tonight, but we must remain very focused,” he stated. “Tension and escalation from Russia may continue, and we still need to remain focused and ready to prevent possible provocations.”

Polish police have established a special operations headquarters covering the Warmian-Masurian and Podlaskie regions, with the Border Guard also participating.

Russia has also escalated rhetoric around Kaliningrad in recent months. In September, the Russian Embassy in the UK warned that any NATO attack or blockade of the exclave could trigger a response “using all means available to Russia, including nuclear weapons.”
