UK Defense Chief Calls on NATO to Brace for Potential Confrontation With Russia

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting warned that Western allies must prepare for a scenario where the United Kingdom and NATO could find themselves in a direct military confrontation with Russia.
Speaking alongside Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in Warsaw, the official stressed the necessity of strengthening deterrence capabilities across Europe, as reported by The Guardian.

Addressing joint defense efforts, Streeting pointed to historical precedents regarding official assurances from Moscow prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
“We must be prepared for a scenario in which the United Kingdom and the NATO alliance find themselves at war with Russia. Not because we want war—we have no quarrel with the Russian people and do not seek war with Russia; NATO is a defensive alliance—but when Putin assures that he has no intention of provoking a war with NATO, we remember what he said about Ukraine just a few days before the invasion,” he noted, The Guardian reported.
The defense minister reaffirmed the alliance’s readiness to defend all member territories while maintaining active support for Kyiv.

“The more we are prepared to stand up to Russia, to defend every inch of NATO territory, the less likely we are to find ourselves in such a scenario,” he added.
On May 27, 2026, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed a historic Security and Defense Partnership Treaty in London, officially designating Russia as the primary threat to European stability.
The agreement was designed to elevate bilateral military cooperation to its highest level and enable rapid, direct defense responses in the event of a regional crisis without awaiting unanimous consensus from NATO’s 32 members.
Tusk underscored that while Poland remained fully committed to the transatlantic alliance, building swift, bilateral mechanisms with key allies like the UK and France was essential to counter regional aggression effectively—particularly as Washington prepared to gradually reduce its military footprint on the continent.
