Ukraine Rejects Iraq’s Claims It Orchestrated Bombings on Iraqi Soil as “Baseless”

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has rejected as baseless accusations by Iraq's national security adviser, Qasim al-Abudi, that Kyiv orchestrated bombing attacks on Iraqi soil, according to RBC-Ukraine on July 28.

In the Dijlah TV interview, al-Abudi claimed an Iraqi intelligence unit had concluded there was "Ukrainian interference" in the country. The adviser himself acknowledged during that interview that he had no evidence to support them.
He said detained foreign citizens had bombed government facilities before confessing to working for Kyiv, according to Iraq's Shafaq News. Al-Abudi alleged the groups staged the attacks to pin them on local armed factions, and did not identify the targeted sites.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi noted that the Iraqi official acknowledged during that same interview that no facts or evidence supported the allegation.
"There are no facts or evidence for such accusations, which the Iraqi official himself acknowledged in his interview. It is important to note that before such high-profile public statements, the Iraqi side did not transmit any relevant information or concerns to Ukraine through diplomatic channels," Tykhyi stated.
According to the spokesperson, had the accusations carried any grounding in reality, diplomatic channels would have been the logical route for raising them. Instead, Kyiv first learned of the claims from a live television broadcast.
"We consider it unacceptable and irresponsible when a senior official of a friendly state publicly spreads such statements without a proper evidentiary basis," Tykhyi declared. "This contradicts the principles of mutual respect and damages Ukrainian-Iraqi relations."
He emphasized that Ukraine continues to regard the Republic of Iraq as an important partner in the Middle East and does not want such incidents to obstruct cooperation between the two countries.
In its Telegram statement, the spokesperson wrote that Kyiv consistently favors the development of mutually beneficial political, economic, and humanitarian ties.
Tykhyi further argued that the theses voiced by the adviser coincide with narratives promoted by Russian propaganda, which it described as directed at discrediting Ukraine and undermining its relations with states across the Middle East. It framed any link as a possibility rather than an established finding.
"It cannot be ruled out that this episode is a consequence of external information influence or an element of a coordinated information-psychological operation aimed at undermining the Ukrainian-Iraqi partnership," Tykhyi explained.
Kyiv called on Iraq's authorities to respond appropriately to the spread of the unfounded accusations, according to RBC-Ukraine. The ministry urged Baghdad to prevent state institutions from being used to disseminate disinformation that, in its assessment, serves third parties' interests and harms bilateral relations.

Kyiv rejected the protest, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissing Iran’s claims of neutrality and pointing to its continued military support for Russia. The strike targeted a logistics route used to ferry military cargo between Iran and Russia.
