Russia Escalates Disinformation Push as Ukraine Deepens Security Role in Gulf

Russia has initiated a disinformation campaign targeting Ukraine following Kyiv’s growing cooperation with Gulf countries amid Iranian aerial attacks, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on April 7.

According to Sybiha’s statement published on X, Moscow responded to Ukraine’s expanding role in the region by attempting to undermine its credibility through coordinated propaganda efforts.
“Moscow is extremely upset with Ukraine’s rapid strengthening of ties with the Gulf countries in the wake of Iranian air terror. They understand that Ukraine’s unique experience has dramatically changed its role in the region,” Sybiha said.

He stated that Russian actors are spreading false claims aimed at discrediting Ukraine’s contribution, including reports alleging that Ukrainian experts were harmed or that Kyiv failed to meet its commitments to partners.
“Thus, they turned to propaganda to try to undermine Ukraine’s contribution. They spread fakes about Ukrainian experts being hit or Ukraine not fulfilling its obligations and so on. We expect more of such nonsense in the coming weeks,” he said.
Sybiha added that Ukraine’s partners in the Gulf region have direct visibility into Kyiv’s role in strengthening air defense and security systems, particularly as countries respond to Iranian aerial threats.

“This propaganda will not succeed. Our partners in the Gulf perfectly know how Ukraine supports the development of a modern, high-tech, and cost-efficient protection,” he said.
He also noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the region established a basis for continued cooperation. “President Zelenskyy’s visit has laid a solid foundation for a multi-year mutually beneficial cooperation,” Sybiha added.
“We take this Russian disinformation campaign as a proof that Moscow admits Ukraine’s success and its own failure,” he said.
Amid the escalating war in the Middle East and the growing threat of Iranian “Shahed” attack drones, Gulf states have turned to Ukraine’s unique combat experience.

Following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the region, Kyiv and Arab nations established a defense partnership driven by Ukraine’s proven, cost-effective methods for intercepting mass drone attacks.
To implement this strategy, Ukraine has deployed over 200 military drone experts and air defense specialists to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. Their primary mission is to share frontline tactics, assist in configuring early warning systems, and integrate mass-produced Ukrainian interceptor drones to counter Iranian aerial threats.
The cooperation quickly yielded practical results, with Ukrainian specialists actively helping intercept Shaheds in Gulf airspace.
