Ukrainian tactical aviation thwarted an attempted Russian offensive targeting the border village of Ryzhivka in Sumy region by launching precision air strikes against staging areas inside Russian territory, Militarnyi reported on July 22.
Russian assault groups backed by reconnaissance and strike drones attempted to advance from the border town of Tyotkino, located in Russia’s Kursk Region, according to OSINT channel Soniah_hub, cited by Militarnyi.

Units from Ukraine’s local Territorial Defense detected the advancing forces in real time and promptly relayed targeting coordinates to tactical aviation elements, directing strikes against concentrated assault infantry and enemy drone crew positions.
Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jets executed the strikes using Western-supplied precision weapons, including US-made GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs and French AASM HAMMER guided bomb kits, Militarnyi reported. Russian air defense forces attempted to intercept the incoming munitions, reportedly firing as many as four surface-to-air missiles at a single guided bomb in a failed effort to protect their staging positions.
The military engagement involved elements of Russia’s 1427th Motorized Rifle Regiment, which continues to operate along this section of the northern border, according to details published by Militarnyi. Despite the localized complication, the overall operational situation in the sector remains under Ukrainian control, with the frontline near Ryzhivka remaining virtually unchanged since early March.
The precision strikes highlight the strategic deployment of Western standoff munitions adapted for Ukrainian aircraft, Militarnyi noted. The 130-kilogram GBU-39 uses unfolding wings and GPS-assisted inertial navigation to strike targets at ranges of up to 110 kilometers when released from high altitude. At the same time, rocket-boosted French AASM HAMMER kits allow Ukrainian pilots to hit hardened fortifications and enemy troops up to 70 kilometers away.
The operational deployment follows the recent first recorded combat use of domestic air-dropped precision weapons, where a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet used the indigenous “Vyrivnyuvach” guided bomb to strike Russian frontline positions in June 2026.
