A US Navy Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft conducted a surveillance mission over the western Black Sea near Bulgaria after arriving at Varna from Naval Air Station Sigonella, marking its first tracked appearance in the region in several months.

According to ItaMilRadar on October 19, flight-tracking data showed the P-8A making several turns over the maritime area, with portions of its mission conducted at altitudes below 9,000 feet.

The aircraft’s extended flight at lower altitudes indicates that maritime patrol was likely a key objective of the operation, rather than intelligence collection alone. However, publicly available flight-tracking data does not provide enough information to determine the mission’s exact purpose.

According to ItaMilRadar, the mission comes amid heightened security concerns in the western Black Sea following a series of reported attacks against commercial shipping near Bulgaria and Romania.

In early October, two commercial ships were targeted by aerial and maritime drones within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, with one vessel sinking following the attack. Further incidents were later reported near the Bulgarian and Romanian coastlines, including strikes against ships in Romanian territorial waters.

The incidents have also intensified concerns over Russia’s hybrid warfare activities in the Black Sea, as attacks on civilian vessels increasingly threaten maritime security and commercial shipping routes near NATO member states.

On October 5, a civilian cargo vessel was struck by two Russian drones near Romania’s coastline, killing two people, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as cited by Reuters.

Romania’s Interior Ministry later confirmed that 11 crew members had been rescued after the vessel caught fire approximately 30 nautical miles south of Sfântu Gheorghe.

According to ItaMilRadar, while exclusive economic zones fall under a different legal framework than territorial waters, attacks on commercial vessels in these areas can still create serious maritime security risks.

However, the publication emphasized that there is no direct evidence connecting the US Navy P-8A’s latest mission to the recent attacks on commercial vessels.

The deteriorating security situation has also prompted Bulgaria to seek additional military assistance from NATO to strengthen its defenses and increase the alliance’s presence in the region.

On October 16, Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said Sofia had requested additional aircraft, air defense systems, counter-drone capabilities, and aerial patrols in response to the increasing frequency of maritime attacks.

Speaking to reporters, Stoyanov expressed concern over the worsening security environment in the Black Sea, pointing to recent strikes in Romanian territorial waters as further evidence of the threats facing countries in the region.

He added that deploying additional allied military resources would not only strengthen regional defenses but also demonstrate a more substantial NATO presence in the Black Sea.
