Bulgaria Deploys Anti-Drone Systems to Protect Critical Infrastructure

Bulgaria will begin deploying anti-drone systems to protect critical infrastructure and increase police patrols around weapons production and storage facilities amid heightened security concerns, Reuters reported on September 18.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said the government had reviewed security measures at critical infrastructure sites and decided to begin equipping them with systems designed to counter drones.
As part of the broader security measures, police have also been instructed to intensify patrols around facilities involved in the production and storage of weapons.
The decision comes days after a fire broke out at a weapons depot operated by Bulgarian arms manufacturer EMCO, raising renewed concerns over the security of the country’s defense facilities, Reuters reported.
EMCO said it believed the fire was the result of sabotage, pointing to more than 10 similar incidents involving Bulgarian defense companies since 2011. The company did not name any potential perpetrators.
EMCO is led by Bulgarian arms dealer Emilian Gebrev, whose facilities have previously been targeted in attacks that Bulgarian prosecutors attributed to alleged Russian operatives, Reuters reported.
The latest incident follows another fire at a Bulgarian military facility in August. On August 10, a blaze broke out at an ammunition storage site at a military plant in central Bulgaria after a powerful explosion was heard.
The incident occurred near the village of Belitsa in the municipality of Tryavna. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev said no one was killed or injured in the explosion and subsequent fire. The blaze was brought under control, while all employees were evacuated from the facility by bus.
