Zelenskyy Urges European Allies to Join FREYJA Anti-Ballistic Shield

Ukraine is urging European partners and international defense manufacturers to unite behind the FREYJA joint anti-ballistic missile shield. The initiative is designed to provide integrated air defense across the continent, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on August 3.

Speaking during a meeting with Ukrainian ambassadors, Zelenskyy stated that domestic industry has already developed the interceptor missiles and mobile launch platforms for the system but requires specialized high-tech components from abroad.

Kyiv is building an Anti-Ballistic Coalition of partner nations possessing the critical radar networks, target sensors, and guidance electronics needed to make the system fully operational, the President noted.

“Those countries that do not have the relevant manufacturing capabilities today, but have Patriot missiles and transfer them, investing these missiles into our ability to protect our skies—we are delighted to welcome them into this Anti-Ballistic Coalition,” Zelenskyy stated during his address.

The initiative positions Ukraine within Europe’s rapidly expanding multi-billion-dollar military-technology market. It aligns domestic efforts alongside major global defense contractors, including Sweden’s Saab, Italy’s Leonardo, several leading German manufacturers, and American firms Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the goal is to build strategic cooperation rather than commercial competition, warning that political cohesion is vital to counter Russian attempts to sow division. “The Russians will do everything to inject disruption into this process to delay the unification of these powerful companies,” Zelenskyy added, instructing Ukrainian diplomats to continue engaging with partner governments to advance the joint defense architecture.

The diplomatic initiative builds on Kyiv’s previous effort to complete a working prototype of the FREYJA anti-ballistic missile system by the first half of 2027 as a cost-effective alternative to US Patriot batteries.
