Ukraine Dismisses Russian Claims of Capturing Kupiansk, Yampil, and Pokrovsk

On November 20, Ukraine’s military has firmly rejected Russian General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov’s claim—made directly to Vladimir Putin—that Russian forces have “liberated Kupiansk.” Ukrainian officials say the city remains under Ukrainian control and accuse Moscow of pushing a coordinated disinformation campaign to mask its battlefield failures.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Kupiansk remains fully under Ukrainian control, and military operations are ongoing to clear Russian sabotage groups that infiltrated parts of the city.
“Kupiansk remains under the control of Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Counter-sabotage measures and special operations to eliminate enemy groups are ongoing,” the military stated.

The situation in Yampil is similar, with Ukrainian troops conducting targeted search-and-strike actions in the area. At the same time, claims that Russia has captured most of Vovchansk or Pokrovsk are described as entirely false.
In Pokrovsk, Ukrainian units continue clearing operations while solidifying logistics to support frontline forces.
Ukraine’s military leadership said these fabricated Russian announcements are intended to compensate for devastating losses and to maintain internal propaganda narratives.
“This latest information fabrication is aimed solely at hiding the critical losses of the Russian army, which is being forced into constant ‘meat assaults,’” the statement said.

Additional clarification came from Viktor Tregubov, Head of Communications for the Joint Forces Grouping, who told RBC-Ukraine that no Russian breakthroughs occurred in Kupiansk.
“As of today, there were no enemy breakthroughs in Kupiansk. The situation remained stable,” he said, noting that Russian forces were scattered on the city’s northern outskirts.
Tregubov also dismissed Vladimir Putin’s claim that Russian troops had surrounded 15 Ukrainian battalions in Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, pointing out that the geography simply makes such an encirclement impossible.
“The area of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi is only four square kilometers. Encircling that many battalions there is prevented by such sciences as physiology and geometry,” he said.
Ukraine’s General Staff added that Ukrainian forces continue to inflict significant losses on Russian troops along the entire front line, with more than 371,000 Russian personnel eliminated since the start of the year.
Earlier, it was reported that the emerging peace plan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine is expected to be drafted as a bilateral agreement between the United States and Ukraine.
