$400,000 Rare Russian Recon Drone for Iskander Shot Down by Ukrainian Interceptors, Video

Ukrainian drone operators have shot down a rare Russian reconnaissance UAV believed to play a key role in guiding missile strikes, according to video and a statement released by drone developer Wild Hornets on March 23.
The destroyed aircraft is believed to belong to the Skat family, a class of drones used for deep reconnaissance and targeting support. Systems such as the Skat-450M are not only used for surveillance but also for providing targeting data for long-range strike systems, including Iskander ballistic missiles.

Wild Hornets said the drone was intercepted by operators from the STRIX unit.
“Operators of the ‘STRIX’ unit destroyed a rare drone equipped with optical and thermal imaging systems, used for deep aerial reconnaissance and guiding Iskander strikes. Throughout the war, only 10 to 20 of these UAVs have been destroyed,” the company said.
“Thank you to the soldiers for such a successful hunt!” the statement added.

The Skat is designed for high-end reconnaissance missions, combining optical and thermal imaging sensors to detect and track targets in various conditions, including at night or in low visibility.
The estimated cost of such a Russian drone is $400,000, according to the STRIX unit.
In operational terms, such drones play a critical role in enabling precision strikes. By identifying targets and transmitting coordinates, platforms like the Skat can significantly improve the accuracy and effectiveness of missile systems.
The third drone is actually a Russian SKAT-350M, a much rarer reconnaissance drone than Supercam. The drone can be easily identified by these dark rectangles on the wings.

Publicly available information on the Skat-450M remains limited, and the system is considered one of the least documented UAVs in Russian service. It is believed to feature an unconventional airframe designed to reduce radar visibility while maintaining aerodynamic performance.
The drone’s structure also minimizes external components, helping reduce the risk of damage during landing, including parachute recovery. It is reportedly capable of operating in extreme temperatures, ranging from minus 45 to plus 45 degrees Celsius.
Earlier, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down a rare Russian Granat-4 reconnaissance drone, a UAV capable of operating more than 100 kilometers behind the front line.
