Russia has claimed that the first regiment equipped with its newest S-500 “Prometey” air and missile defense system has entered combat duty, according to statements by Defense Minister Andrey Belousov carried by Russian state-aligned media on December 17.

The deployment is presented by Moscow as a step toward strengthening Russia’s strategic missile defense architecture, particularly against long-range and high-altitude threats.

“The first regiment equipped with the unique S-500 air defense missile system, capable of engaging targets in near space, has taken up combat duty,” Belousov said.

No additional technical or operational details were disclosed. Russian officials also did not clarify whether the unit has undergone any real-world combat testing or remains limited to a declared readiness status.

Russian authorities had previously announced the formation of a new S-500-equipped unit in December 2024, though concrete timelines and locations were not made public at the time.

According to the Ukrainian defense media outlet Militarnyi, the S-500 program has been in development for more than two decades. Work on the system began in 2002, but it was formally accepted into service only in 2021, following years of delays and incremental testing.

Russian officials describe the S-500 as a multi-layered system designed to intercept medium-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles during the terminal phase of flight. The system is also advertised as capable of targeting airborne command posts, airborne early warning aircraft, and low-Earth-orbit satellites.

A key element of the program has been its intended integration with Russia’s fixed A-135 “Amur” missile defense system, which is tasked with defending Moscow against ballistic missile threats, Militarnyi notes. The S-500’s interceptor missiles—designated 77N6-N and 77N6-N1—are reported to share a high degree of commonality with the A-135 architecture.

Exact performance parameters remain classified. Western military analysts have previously assessed that, if Russian claims about interceptor unification are accurate, the 77N6-N missile could engage ballistic targets at altitudes and ranges of roughly 100 kilometers.

Russian sources have also asserted that the interceptor reaches speeds of up to 5,500 meters per second, with unverified claims suggesting it accelerates to maximum velocity within four to five seconds.

Earlier, operators from Ukraine’s 412th Nemesis Brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces carried out a successful strike against Russian air defense assets, destroying three surface-to-air missile systems in a single operation, punching almost a $100 million hole in the Russian air defenses.
