A Russian Sopka-2 radar system was damaged in a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Voronezh region, Russian media outlet ASTRA reported on September 17.

According to the report, one of the drones detonated near the village of Harmashevka in Kantemirovsky district on September 16, damaging the radar’s antenna. The site is more than 170 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Voronezh governor Pavel Gusev confirmed the incident, saying a drone had been destroyed, while Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed only that one UAV had been shot down over the region.

The Sopka-2 system is designed to collect, process, and analyze airspace data. It is a three-coordinate radar complex with a range of up to 450 kilometers, capable of detecting aircraft and determining their altitude and distance.

Built to endure harsh conditions, it can operate in winds up to 40 meters per second and temperatures as low as –40°C.

Recently, Ukrainian UAVs destroyed a Russian RLK-1 “Navigation-South” radar complex in the Rostov region, which had been deployed at the site of a former air defense unit.
