Belgium Threatens Legal Action if EU Confiscates Russian Assets in Euroclear

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has cautioned that Belgium may pursue legal action if the European Union moves forward with seizing frozen Russian assets held by the Euroclear financial institution.
Speaking to VRT on December 10, De Wever stressed that Belgium is engaged in ongoing negotiations with the European Commission to ensure that any proposed plan aligns with the “minimum conditions” set by Belgium—conditions he described as rational, reasonable, and justified.

“We are in talks with the Commission to determine whether the proposal can meet Belgium’s basic conditions, which are widely recognized as logical and justified,” he said. “These risks cannot be borne solely by Belgium.”
If no agreement is reached, De Wever stated that Belgium does not rule out going to court.
“You can never rule anything out, especially if a decision is made that contradicts legal principles and imposes serious risks on our country,” he said.

The Prime Minister also criticized the notion of confiscating Russian assets as “irrational and ill-considered,” emphasizing that the EU has other potential methods of financing aid for Ukraine, albeit requiring unanimous approval from all member states.
Earlier, finance ministers from the Group of Seven expressed support for using frozen Russian assets to fund reparations to Ukraine.
