Boris Johnson Warns UK May Need to Deploy Ground Troops to Ukraine if Trump Cuts Support
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suggested that the United Kingdom may have to deploy ground troops to Ukraine if Donald Trump, as US president, decides to cut financial and military support for Kyiv.
Speaking with GB News, Johnson voiced concerns about the influence of certain Republican figures whom he describes as “pro-Putin” within Trump’s circle, suggesting that they may advocate for reduced aid to Ukraine.
Johnson stressed the importance of the current international financial support for Ukraine, viewing it as a strategic investment to contain Russian and Chinese ambitions. He highlighted that a reduction in support could significantly impact European security, potentially escalating threats to NATO-aligned countries, including Baltic states and Georgia, and even affecting stability in regions like the South China Sea.
“If Ukraine falls, the repercussions could extend across Europe, requiring increased UK involvement to support allies on the continent,” Johnson explained, emphasizing the need for collective security.
Johnson also commented on Trump’s past support for Ukraine, particularly his authorization of Javelin anti-tank missile shipments, which played a critical role in Ukraine’s initial defense efforts. Despite this, Johnson expressed concern that some US politicians currently advising Trump hold what he described as “wrong” and “dangerous” views on the war.
