British counterterrorism police have arrested three men in London on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service—identified as Russia—under the UK’s National Security Act, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on October 23.

The men, aged 48, 45, and 44, were detained at addresses in west and central London, with searches continuing at those locations and another site in west London.

All three suspects were arrested under Section 3 of the 2023 National Security Act, which targets individuals accused of aiding foreign intelligence operations. They were taken to a London police station for questioning.

Commander Dominic Murphy, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said the arrests were part of efforts to disrupt the use of “proxies” by foreign intelligence agencies.

“Anyone who might be contacted by and tempted into carrying out criminal activity on behalf of a foreign state here in the UK should think again. This kind of activity will be investigated and anyone found to be involved can expect to be prosecuted and there are potentially very serious consequences for those who are convicted.”

Previously, it was reported that Polish prosecutors have formally charged a Russian couple with espionage, and one spouse additionally with plotting to send an explosive device via courier, according to state officials.
