Russian forces launched a coordinated wave of drone and artillery strikes across Ukraine in the morning, targeting residential areas in Sumy, infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk region, and the capital city of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials reported on April 4.

In the early hours, Russian drones attacked Kyiv, leading to a fire in the Darnytskyi district. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that debris from a downed drone struck the roof of a three-story office and warehouse building.

The State Emergency Service (DSNS) deployed 40 rescuers and nine units of equipment to the scene, successfully extinguishing the blaze. No casualties were reported in the capital. However, the aerial threat forced Ukrainian national railway company Ukrzaliznytsia to implement safety stops and evacuate passengers from suburban trains within the Kyiv region until the danger passed.

The situation was far more severe in Sumy, where Russian strike drones hit a 16-story residential building. Emergency crews conducted high-altitude firefighting operations on the upper floors while simultaneously evacuating residents, the Sumy Regional State Administration and DSNS reported.

According to regional police, 11 people were injured in the city strike, including a 15-year-old child. Over the past 24 hours, the broader Sumy region has suffered three fatalities and 22 injuries due to relentless Russian shelling of civilian infrastructure and engineering networks.

Russian forces also struck the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing five people and wounding at least 22 others, including three children. A FPV drone strike on a shopping area in Nikopol killed three women and two men. Among the 19 wounded in that attack is a 14-year-old girl currently in serious condition, Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration reported.

More than 20 separate attacks involving drones, artillery, and aerial bombs struck the Nikopol and Synelnyky districts. These strikes injured a 41-year-old woman and two young boys, aged six years and five months, while damaging private homes, infrastructure, and an administrative building.

The intensification follows a record-breaking March 2026 campaign where Moscow launched a historic 24-hour barrage of nearly 1,000 aerial weapons, including over 900 Shahed-type drones. As Ukrainian air defenses adapt to these massive “drone swarms,” the Kremlin has increasingly shifted its focus toward terrorizing civilian logistical hubs—including the Sumy residential sector and Dnipropetrovsk shopping districts—to offset a battlefield advance that has slowed to a crawl of mere meters per day.
