China has rejected media reports suggesting it was considering participation in an international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
According to Chinese state media Global Times, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on August 25 that “these reports are not consistent with reality” and reiterated that China’s position on Ukraine “remains consistent and clear.”
On August 24, Germany’s Die Welt, citing European diplomats, reported that Beijing might be ready to join a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine under a United Nations mandate.
The report noted that such involvement was viewed in Brussels with mixed reactions. On the one hand, China’s participation could potentially facilitate acceptance of international peacekeeping forces. On the other, it raised concerns over possible espionage risks.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry dismissed the claims, stressing that its stance on Ukraine has not changed.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine did not rule out China’s participation in peace talks if Beijing was prepared to provide security guarantees, assistance, and support for Ukraine’s recovery.
