Czech President Petr Pavel has stated that Ukraine may need to consider a temporary cessation of hostilities with Russia in order to rebuild its economy and prepare for future defense, should military support from the West begin to dwindle, according to his radio interview with BBC’s World Service on August 4.

Pavel said, “If support from the West diminishes, Ukraine may have to make some compromises to gain time for economic and military recovery.” He emphasized this would not mean recognizing Russian territorial gains, but rather a pragmatic pause. “Even an unsatisfactory peace could offer room for Ukraine to recover,” he added.

Also Pavel reiterated that a temporary agreement might “create space for a stronger position in the future.” However, he underscored that any such arrangement must not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty or future prospects.

Pavel, a former NATO Military Committee chairman, also cautioned European leaders against waning interest in Ukraine amid domestic challenges. “It is our responsibility to ensure support continues as long as needed,” he said.

Earlier, in December 2023, Pavel warned that Western resolve may weaken as the war drags on. His latest remarks reflect ongoing debates within European capitals about long-term support for Ukraine and potential strategic recalibrations in 2025.

Meanwhile, Presidential Office Head Andrii Yermak said the coming week “may bring a real opportunity to end the war,” as Ukraine nears the second Global Peace Summit.

He emphasized that any peace must be grounded in the UN Charter and international law.
