US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, is expected to visit the region in the coming days, two sources told the Kyiv Post on August 1. His trip comes as Trump’s August 8 deadline for brokering a peace deal with Russia draws near.

The news follows confirmation that another Trump envoy, Steve Witkoff, will also travel to Russia. “Yeah, going to Israel and then he’s going to Russia, believe it or not,” Trump told reporters on July 31.

Sources familiar with the plans said Witkoff’s trip was “proposed by the Russians” earlier this week and approved despite Trump’s initial doubts. The President reportedly told aides he believed the visit would be “useless.”

The dual diplomatic efforts come amid mounting pressure from Trump, who has grown increasingly frustrated with Vladimir Putin. On July 14, Trump warned that sanctions could follow if the Kremlin continued to stall negotiations with Ukraine. Two weeks later, on July 28, he tightened the pressure by slashing the original 50-day timeline for a ceasefire to just 10–12 days.

“There’ll be sanctions, but they seem to be pretty good at avoiding sanctions,” Trump said. “They’re wily characters and they’re pretty good at avoiding sanctions, so we’ll see what happens.”

Previously, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is open to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but only after what the Kremlin calls “preparatory work at the expert level.”
