Romanian, Czech, and Hungarian intelligence services have dismantled a Belarusian espionage network operating in Europe. In addition, Prague has expelled a staff member of the Belarusian embassy, according to the press service of the Czech Security and Information Service (BIS) report on September 8.

According to the BIS, the network was organized by Belarus’s State Security Committee (KGB) to recruit agents and collect intelligence.

Among those involved was a former deputy of Moldova’s intelligence service (SIS) who allegedly passed secret information to the KGB.

BIS noted that the network was able to operate largely because its members could move freely across Europe, according to RBC.

The Czech Foreign Ministry confirmed that the expelled embassy employee was working for the KGB.

“We will not tolerate the misuse of diplomatic cover for intelligence activities,” the ministry said.

Previously, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has disrupted a covert operation by Belarusian intelligence aimed at gathering sensitive military data along the country’s northern border.
