The attack targeted one of the key components of Russia’s air defense network in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region.

Video released by Ukrainian forces shows a domestically developed FP-2 Middle Strike drone, produced by Fire Point, approaching the system from the side and hitting the position. A second drone is then seen flying over the site, apparently conducting a post-strike assessment.

However, the available footage does not clearly confirm whether the target was an operational Pantsir system or a decoy. Russian forces have increasingly deployed mock-ups in an effort to mislead Ukrainian drones and protect high-value air defense assets, according to Ukrainian defense media outlet Militarnyi.

The Pantsir-S1 is designed to provide close-range protection for military installations and to shield longer-range air defense systems. Russian officials have frequently described it as one of their most effective tools against long-range drone threats.

The Pantsir system is considered one of Russia’s more modern and critical air defense assets. According to Ukraine’s Security Service, the cost of a single Pantsir system is estimated at between $15 million and $20 million.

Earlier, reports emerged that seven new Pantsir air defense towers were built around the residence of Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Valdai in March 2026, bringing the total number of such positions there to 27.

The construction of all seven new towers reportedly began on the same day, March 17, based on analysis of satellite imagery.
