Denmark is actively working on mechanisms to advance Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations despite Hungary’s ongoing obstruction of opening negotiation clusters, Minister for European Affairs of Denmark, Marie Bjerre, said during a European Council meeting in Brussels on September 16.

Bjerre confirmed that Denmark is preparing both political and practical measures to continue the EU negotiations with Ukraine, even without the formal opening of the negotiation clusters, which have been blocked by Hungary.

“We are still pressing Hungary,” Bjerre said, emphasizing that the initial goal remains to open the first cluster, with hopes of advancing to others as well.

“Ukraine would be ready to open all the clusters this year, as the European Commission has stated,” she added.

While acknowledging Hungary’s persistent blockade, Bjerre underscored that Denmark is working on alternatives to push the process forward. These measures would allow Ukraine to continue reforms even without the formal opening of the clusters.

“When we can officially open the clusters, we will be able to close them quickly, bringing Ukraine closer to the EU,” she concluded.

Bjerre mentioned that at a recent informal meeting of EU ministers in Copenhagen the question of EU enlargement was raised, with all member states, except Hungary, expressing a desire to move forward with the talks about Ukraine’s accession.

Previously, it was reported that the Ukrainian delegation, together with the European Commission, has wrapped up screening meetings in Brussels under Negotiation Chapter 11: “Agriculture and Rural Development.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico earlier, announcing Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s EU integration and new energy cooperation agreements.
