Drone Attack Targets Military Chemical Plant in Russia’s Tula Region

Authors

In the early hours of November 9, a chemical plant in the Russian city of Aleksin, located in the Tula region, was struck by drones. The extent of the damage the strike caused is currently unknown. The attack has been confirmed by the Center for Counteracting Disinformation (CCD).

According to Andrii Kovalenko, head of the CCD, the assault targeted the Aleksin Chemical Plant, which is part of the Russian defense industry. The facility has been involved in the production of ammunition, propellants, and composite materials used by Russia’s military and aerospace sectors. It also manufactures components for large-caliber ammunition.

The Aleksin Chemical Plant, a part of the state-owned corporation Rostec, has faced international sanctions. In 2023, the US government placed the facility on its sanctions list due to its production of military-grade materials for the Russian defense industry. Similarly, in February 2024, the European Union sanctioned the plant for supplying products used in the manufacturing of ammunition and explosives for the Russian military.

The attack prompted air raid alerts across several Russian regions starting from 9:30 PM, with explosions reported in Aleksin around 3:00 AM. Local residents reported hearing several blasts and observed the movement of fire trucks responding to the scene.
