Easter Egg Hunt Leads to Shock Discovery of Polonium 210 Bottle in Germany

An Easter egg hunt in southwestern Germany took an unexpected turn when two men discovered a container labeled “Polonium 210,” prompting a large-scale emergency response.

The object was found in a private garden on the outskirts of Vaihingen an der Enz in the state of Baden-Württemberg, according to a report by Der Spiegel on April 5.

Authorities treated the discovery as a potential hazardous materials incident. More than 130 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, including radiation protection units and specialists trained to handle dangerous substances.

Local fire officials said the find was taken seriously because of the professional labeling and the container’s weight, noting that its appearance suggested it could be authentic.

However, initial measurements conducted at the site did not detect elevated radiation levels. This may indicate that the container does not actually contain the radioactive substance indicated on the label.

The suspicious item has since been removed by environmental authorities for laboratory testing to determine its contents.

Polonium-210 is a highly toxic radioactive substance that gained global attention following the poisoning of former Russian security officer Alexander Litvinenko in London.

Earlier, Sinan Selen, head of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, warned at a joint conference with the Association for Security in Business that foreign actors are showing greater willingness to take risks and are using a broader set of methods.

According to her, Russia is intensifying hybrid attacks against Germany, where domestic intelligence officials report a sharp rise in espionage, sabotage, and other hostile activity.
