Estonian President Calls for EU to Consider Full Trade Embargo Against Russia

Estonian President Alar Karis has urged the European Union to consider imposing a full trade embargo on Russia on February 9.
He made this statement on X following his visit to Vilnius alongside the presidents of the European Commission, Latvia, and Poland.

The visit marked the synchronization of the Baltic states' power grids with continental Europe, a significant step in reducing dependence on Russian energy.
“The European Union must further strengthen its independence and halt the import of Russian energy resources. We should even seriously consider the possibility of a full trade embargo against Russia,” Karis stated.
European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen also emphasized that Russia’s war in Ukraine has demonstrated the need for European countries to become fully independent in the energy sector.
Earlier, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia successfully synchronized their power grids with continental Europe, marking a historic step toward full energy independence from Russia.
The transition, completed via the LitPol Link between Lithuania and Poland, ended decades of reliance on the Soviet-era Unified Power System. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called it a “historic moment,” emphasizing that Moscow can no longer use energy as a tool of pressure.
