The European Union has allocated its first $10 million toward the establishment of a Special Tribunal aimed at prosecuting Russian leadership for crimes related to the full-scale war against Ukraine.

The announcement was made on January 22 by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, who shared the news on social media platform X.

“Russia’s leaders are responsible for this war, and they must be held accountable. There can be no impunity,” Kallas stated.

She also noted that the contract was signed in cooperation with the Council of Europe, following discussions with Swiss Federal President Alain Berset.

Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed a law that effectively allows Russia to disregard rulings by foreign and international courts in criminal cases conducted without Moscow’s participation.
