The European Union has confirmed it will not freeze funding for Ukraine after the recent approval of bill №13533, which reinstates essential safeguards for the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), as was reported on July 31.

In response to questions from European Pravda, European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier affirmed that "there are no plans to freeze EU funding for Ukraine" following the passage of this law, which aims to restore the key guarantees that ensure the independence of these critical anti-corruption institutions.

Mercier emphasized that its of utmost importance for the EU to ensure that Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies remain independent, and that Ukraine continues implementing the necessary reforms to ensure the rule of law.

“The most important thing right now is that Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies remain independent, and that Ukraine continues implementing the necessary reforms to ensure the rule of law,” he stated.

The EU’s stance comes amidst ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s efforts to root out corruption and strengthen its legal framework. The law, which was passed by Ukraine’s parliament, was hailed as a step forward in restoring confidence in the country’s anti-corruption efforts. However, the EU has warned that while key safeguards have been restored, issues remain to be addressed in the fight against corruption.

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marija Kos also welcomed the Ukrainian parliament’s decision to reverse a previous move that weakened the independence of NABU and SAP.

She said in a post on X, "The parliament corrected the decision from last week that weakened the independence of NABU and SAP. Today's law restores key safeguards, but challenges remain.”

“The EU supports the demands of Ukrainian citizens for reforms. Upholding fundamental values and fighting corruption must remain a priority,” she concluded.

Kos' comments signalize the EU's continued commitment to supporting Ukraine in its reform efforts and its integration into the European Union.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Parliament unanimously approved a presidential bill restoring the full independence of the country’s top anti-corruption bodies—NABU and SAP—after a recent law sparked intense backlash and protests for curbing their powers.
