EU’s Jørgensen: Russian Energy Imports Must End, Even After Peace in Ukraine

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stated that even after peace is achieved, Europe should no longer import Russian energy. He confirmed that he would meet with US energy security official Chris Wright next week to discuss the matter further, The Guardian reported on September 5.
US President Donald Trump’s reported suggestion that European countries should rapidly halt purchasing Russian oil has added a new dimension to efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
According to Finland’s influential President Alexander Stubb and White House sources, Trump urged the Coalition of the Willing to stop funding Moscow’s war efforts through fuel sales.
While the European Union has plans to phase out Russian energy by 2027, Trump advocates for an accelerated timeline, The Guardian claimed.

This issue has taken center stage today, as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with European Council President António Costa and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Slovakia, along with Hungary, remains heavily dependent on Russian gas imports and has criticized Ukraine for targeting Russian energy infrastructure, The Guardian writes.
Fico has also faced backlash for his stance, particularly after breaking with the EU to attend a military parade in China, where he met with both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
During his meeting with Putin, Fico openly criticized the EU, advocating for a “standardized” relationship with Russia—an opinion that sharply contrasts with the rest of the bloc, according to The Guardian.
Previously, it was reported that European Union member states were considering new rules to prevent Russian natural gas from slipping into the bloc’s energy market once a full ban takes effect by the end of 2027.
