Serbia Won’t Impose Sanctions on Russia Despite Pressure, Vučić Says

At a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić complained about the challenges his country has faced since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
As reported by Blic on September 2, Vučić addressed Putin in Russian and expressed gratitude for what he described as a “warm welcome” during his visit to Moscow on May 9.
The Serbian president emphasized that cooperation with Russia remains crucial for Serbia at all levels. He singled out the energy sector, and particularly the purchase of Russian gas, as an area of particular importance.

“I want to say that since the beginning of the ‘Ukrainian crisis,’ Serbia has been in a difficult situation, trying to withstand the pressure, but we have still managed to maintain a principled position toward the Russian Federation. We will continue to fight for the independence of Serbia, and we will also try to remain the only country in Europe that has not imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation,” Vučić said.
The Serbian leader also expressed confidence that ties between Belgrade and Moscow could be further strengthened. He declared his belief that Serbia and Russia would succeed in deepening their relationship at the highest level.
Earlier, the United States granted a one-month sanctions waiver to Naftna Industrija Srbije, the Serbian oil company majority-owned by Russian firms, marking the fifth and final extension.
