A fire at a manufacturing facility in Voronezh has destroyed two Russian R-330Zh “Zhitel” electronic warfare (EW) systems, which were reportedly intended for deployment in Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR).

The fire broke out during the night of January 27-28, 2025, at the “Protec” plant, a facility involved in the production of electronic warfare equipment. The incident resulted in the complete destruction of two R-330Zh “Zhitel” systems.

The R-330Zh “Zhitel” is a modern Russian EW system designed to disrupt enemy communications, including mobile and satellite signals. It is capable of jamming radio communications within a range of up to 30 kilometers, impacting GPS navigation and satellite-based communication networks such as Inmarsat and Iridium.

According to HUR, Russian forces had planned to deploy these systems to the combat zone in Ukraine, but the fire prevented their transfer. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

The R-330Zh “Zhitel” is a Russian EW system designed for automated detection, direction-finding, and analysis of radio emissions. It is claimed to jam satellite communication terminals, GPS navigation systems, and GSM cellular networks.

Earlier on February 7, a powerful explosion at a Russian military base near Moscow reportedly destroyed two 117Zh6 RLK-MC Valday radar systems—Russia’s latest anti-drone technology.

According to Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, the base was responsible for securing Moscow’s airspace, making the incident significant.
