The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Office of the Prosecutor General, and the National Police have successfully extradited a Russian war criminal serviceman to Lithuania, marking the first such extradition since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion against Ukraine, SBU reported on November 21.

The Russian soldier, identified as Margen Gadzhimagemedov, a military police inspector from Russia’s Caspian Flotilla, is accused of war crimes, including the torture of prisoners of war at a facility in the temporarily occupied Melitopol airport.

Among the victims was a Lithuanian volunteer who had been assisting Ukraine’s Armed Forces since the early days of Russia’s full scale inavasion in 2022. The detainee allegedly used various forms of torture, including suffocation, electrocution, and cold water immersion against prisoners, according to SBU.

Gadzhimagemedov was captured by Ukrainian forces during the August 2024 battles near town of Robotyne in southern Ukraine.

Following a joint investigation by Ukrainian authorities and international partners, Lithuania’s Vilnius City Court charged him with violating the Geneva Conventions and war laws. In response to a request from the Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office, Ukraine extradited him for trial, where he faces prison terms of 10 to 20 years, or life imprisonment, for his actions.

Previously, it was reported that a Russian neo-Nazi paramilitary group fighting alongside the Russian Armed Forces has publicly announced a contest encouraging the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

According to multiple open-source intelligence reports and media coverage, members of the Rusich Sabotage and Assault Reconnaissance Group (DShRG Rusich) have invited others to submit photographic evidence of executed Ukrainian POWs, offering cryptocurrency rewards in exchange.
