France is reportedly considering the deployment of nuclear-capable fighter jets in Germany as part of efforts to strengthen European defense capabilities amid discussions on the potential reduction of the U.S. military presence in Europe.
According to The Telegraph on February 25, French officials have assessed the feasibility of stationing these aircraft in Germany as a strategic measure. A French government source indicated that such a move would send a signal to Russian leadership while also increasing pressure on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to take similar actions.
“Deploying a few French nuclear-capable fighter jets in Germany would not pose significant challenges and would serve as a strong message,” the official stated.
The discussion arises as U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated calls for NATO allies to increase defense spending. Last year, he suggested that the United States might not intervene if certain NATO members failed to meet their financial commitments to the alliance, raising concerns among European leaders about regional security.
France’s nuclear deterrent operates independently of NATO, unlike the United Kingdom’s Trident system, which is integrated into the alliance’s strategic framework. France maintains an estimated 300 nuclear warheads as part of its deterrence strategy, with delivery capabilities from both submarines and aircraft.
Friedrich Merz, who is expected to assume the role of Germany’s chancellor following recent elections, has urged France and the UK to consider expanding their nuclear deterrence umbrella to include Germany. He has emphasized the need for greater European defense autonomy amid shifting U.S. policies.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently discussed European security measures with Merz before traveling to Washington to present his strategic vision to President Trump.
While German diplomatic sources suggest that formal negotiations on hosting French nuclear-capable aircraft have not commenced, they acknowledge that the proposal could increase pressure on the UK to reinforce its own European defense commitments.
Earlier, a U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, was observed flying over Estonian airspace near the Russian border, escorted by multiple F-35A fighter jets, according to FlightRadar24.
