French Foreign Minister Visits Chornobyl, Highlights $11M Support for Damage Recovery

On July 21, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant to witness firsthand the damage caused by a Russian drone strike earlier this year.
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Barrot said his visit to Chornobyl was aimed at understanding the extent of the destruction inflicted on the protective structure of Reactor 4.

“I went to Chornobyl to see with my own eyes the consequences of the drone strike that hit the shelter of the fourth reactor in February,” he said.
Barrot noted that France has allocated $11 million to help address the damage and urged other countries to contribute to the recovery efforts.
“France stands side by side with Ukraine. We are increasing pressure on Russia through a new package of sanctions,” he added.

On the night of February 14, a Russian drone armed with an explosive warhead struck the shelter over Reactor 4 at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The attack caused significant damage to the structure, known as the sarcophagus, which covers the reactor involved in the 1986 nuclear disaster.
Previously, a Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has caused a complete blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy.
