Germany, as the European Union’s largest economy, must be ready to take a leading role in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine after the war ends, said Roderich Kiesewetter, the security spokesperson for Germany’s opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in an interview with Schwäbische Zeitung on January 3.

Kiesewetter emphasized that Germany’s economic strength obligates it to make a significant contribution to peacekeeping and European security architecture.

He argued that Germany must intervene “at the appropriate time with well-equipped troops,” and dismissing such an option would be “irresponsible.”

However, he underscored that German involvement should occur within a broader framework of joint EU and NATO actions.

“Peacekeeping forces are effective and realistic given Europe’s limited material and human resources, provided that peacekeeping is integrated into the European and transatlantic security architecture, and therefore NATO,” Kiesewetter explained.

“This ensures Ukraine remains under NATO’s nuclear umbrella.”

Earlier, reports emerged that a majority of Germans back the deployment of international peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in case of a ceasefire, but far fewer support German soldiers participating in such a mission, according to a YouGov survey.
