Hungary to Deploy Air Defense Systems Near Ukraine Border
Hungary is deploying additional air defense in the northeast of the country after the US allowed Ukraine to hit Russian territories with long-range missiles.
In a video published on Facebook, the Hungarian Defense Minister, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky explained this move stating that “the scope of the Russian-Ukrainian war is greater than ever before, and the war has entered its most dangerous phase.”
According to Szalay-Bobrovniczky, this stems from Western powers granting Ukraine permission to use long-range weapons against targets on territories inside Russia. In response, Russia, as the minister claims, adjusted its nuclear doctrine “for this reason.”
Recently, Russian leader Vladimir Putin has approved Russia's updated nuclear doctrine. According to the updated Fundamentals of State Nuclear Deterrence Policy, Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in response to the use of weapons of mass destruction against itself or its allies, as well as in the event of aggression against it or Belarus involving conventional weapons.
"However, to prepare for all possibilities, I ordered the recently purchased air control and air defense systems and the capabilities built on them to be installed in the northeast," he said after a meeting of the Defense Council led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
On November 19, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols officially confirmed that the White House had authorized Ukraine to use long-range weapons for strikes on Russian territory.
Ukraine's Defense Forces have reportedly carried out their first-ever strike on a military target within Russian territory, using US-manufactured ATACMS ballistic missiles.
On November 20, hints emerged from British government circles suggesting that the US had given Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles for strikes on Russian territory.
