Kallas: EU Supports Zelenskyy’s Decision Not to Hold Elections Amid War

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas voiced support for the EU’s position on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision not to hold elections, APA reported, citing Kallas’s statement ahead of the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on February 24.
“There is no need to hold elections during military operations,” Kallas stated.
On February 23, Zelenskyy addressed the challenges of holding elections during wartime at the “Ukraine. Year 2025” forum, questioning the feasibility of organizing a democratic vote under current conditions.
“Right now, how can people vote when Russia is launching 267 drones at us?” the Ukrainian President said.

Ukraine’s constitution prohibits elections under martial law. Holding national elections amid full-scale war would be logistically impossible and legally invalid.
On February 19, European leaders rejected recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who referred to Zelenskyy as a dictator and questioned his democratic legitimacy.
In a recent post, Trump spread misleading and false claims about the war in Ukraine and Zelenskyy in particular, calling him a “dictator without elections.”
