On April 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Western efforts to promote peace in Ukraine, accusing European leaders of attempting to maintain the current Ukrainian government under the guise of diplomatic initiatives.

In an interview with Kommersant, Lavrov said:

“All these peacekeeping schemes drawn up by the Macrons and the Starmers are based on the idea that they are needed to save at least a piece of land where a Nazi, openly Russophobic regime can continue to exist.”

Lavrov further claimed that the West is not serious about democracy in Ukraine:

“No one is even mentioning elections,” he said. “Now, the Americans have said elections should be held, but Europe will do everything to make sure the regime does not truly change.”

He went on to suggest that European leaders may look for “some new little führer who would be less dependent on various substances,” but argued that under such a scenario, “the nature of the regime would remain the same as it was under Volodymyr Zelenskyy.”

On April 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized in an interview with CBS that when confronting aggression, there is no room for neutrality—there is a clear aggressor and a clear victim.
