Thousands of Slovaks have once again taken to the streets in protest against the pro-Russian policies of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Demonstrations are being held in over 50 cities across the country, according to Aktuality on February 7.

In the capital Bratislava, up to 45,000 people gathered waving Slovak, EU, and NATO flags. Several cities have joined the protests for the first time, including Brno, Czech Republic.

Prime Minister Fico responded to the demonstrations with a statement on social media, questioning the motives behind the protests.

“I wonder why people are really protesting today,” he wrote, attaching an article claiming that the European Commission sees no indication that Slovakia is considering leaving the EU.

The wave of protests has also spread beyond Slovakia’s borders, with Slovaks abroad demonstrating in cities such as Prague, Berlin, Brussels, Krakow, London, New York, Paris, and Luxembourg.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to recent remarks by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who referred to Zelenskyy as “an enemy of Slovakia” and suggested that restoring Russian gas transit is the only viable solution for his country.
