Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to recent remarks by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who referred to Zelenskyy as “an enemy of Slovakia” and suggested that restoring Russian gas transit is the only viable solution for his country.
In a statement on January 28, Zelenskyy emphasized the dangers of relying on Russian energy, singling out Fico’s approach as a misstep that may not align with the broader priorities of European independence and sovereignty.
“American LNG is paid for with money, but Russian gas comes at the cost of not only money but also independence and sovereignty,” Zelenskyy stated. “Many in Europe have learned this lesson and chose to preserve their independence and sovereignty.”
Zelenskyy addressed Fico’s position, stating, “He chooses Moscow over America and other partners who can provide his country with gas on commercial terms. This is his mistake.”
The Ukrainian President also underscored the importance of fostering partnerships that contribute to the long-term security and prosperity of European nations.
“Everyone in Europe needs to think ahead and develop relationships that strengthen our nations,” Zelenskyy added.
