Massive Overnight Barrage: Russia Fires 574 Drones, 40 Missiles at Ukraine

Russia launched a massive overnight barrage against Ukraine, firing drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic Kinzhal missiles in one of its largest-scale attacks in weeks. The strikes triggered nationwide air alerts that began late last night and continued into the early morning hours. Explosions were reported in Lviv, Mukachevo, Zaporizhzhia, and several other regions.
Russia unleashed 574 Shahed drones and 40 missiles, including Kinzhal and Iskander ballistic missiles, as well as Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles, according to Ukraine’s Air Force on August 21.
Air defenses intercepted the vast majority of the incoming weapons:
546 out of 574 drones;
1 of 4 Kinzhal missiles;
18 of 19 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
12 of 14 Kalibr cruise missiles.
Other missiles, however, hit civilian areas across multiple regions.

In Mukachevo, Western Ukraine, Russian missiles struck a local enterprise, causing toxic air pollution. Authorities urged residents to close windows and stay indoors. By 7:15 a.m., officials confirmed 12 people were injured, with 10 taken to St. Martin’s Hospital by ambulance.
As of 9:28 a.m. Ukrainian State Emergency Service (SES) reported that 15 people were injured in the Russian strike on Mukachevo.
Ukrainian FM Andrii Sybiha added that the Russians targeted a US venture in Mukachevo.
“One of the missiles struck a major American electronics manufacturer in our westernmost region, leading to serious damage and casualties. A fully civilian facility that has nothing to do with defense or the military,” he wrote on X.
Contrary to all efforts to end the war, Russia undertook a massive combined air strike on Ukraine overnight.

In Lviv, cruise missiles and drones slammed into the city and the surrounding region. “The blast wave damaged dozens of houses — windows and roofs were shattered,” Mayor Andrii Sadovyi said. Fires were also reported across the city.
Regional governor Maksym Kozytsky confirmed one person was killed and two were injured.
Later, Sadovyi reported a third casualty, a 38-year-old woman hospitalized with chest wounds and lung injuries.
Presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak condemned the assault, saying: “Russia attacked Lviv with Shaheds and missiles. There is one dead, many civilian houses damaged. Putin talks about peace but does nothing to achieve it. Instead, he continues killing civilians. There is no logic here, only a desire to kill. We are working with partners to stop these murders.”

In Zaporizhzhia, South West of Ukraine, Russian forces struck twice, damaging residential buildings and several industrial facilities. Windows were blown out, and cleanup crews were deployed.
In the Cherkasy region, Central Ukraine, six missiles and 12 drones were shot down, but debris damaged homes in the Zolotonosha district.
In Lutsk, in the Volyn region, the city endured drone and missile strikes, but no casualties were reported.

Khmelnytskyi region: air defenses downed multiple targets overnight. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far.
Rivne region: falling debris damaged a private home and a municipal building, though no injuries were reported.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, denounced the assault: “Again, a maximally stupid Russian attack with missiles and Shaheds on many cities: Lviv, Rivne, Lutsk, Mukachevo, and more. From a military point of view, these attacks make no sense. Russia won’t win the war this way, it won’t break the rear, it won’t change the battlefield. It’s simply a desire to kill and terrorize civilians.”
Earlier, Russian forces carried out a massive drone strike on the city of Okhtyrka in Ukraine’s Sumy region, injuring at least 12 people, including two children.
