Russian Overnight Attack Sparks Huge Blazes at Poltava Energy Facilities

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said that an overnight Russian attack struck energy facilities in the central Poltava region, sparking large fires and damaging gas infrastructure, according to Reuters on August 19.
“On the night of August 19, 2025, Russian occupation forces carried out another massive attack on energy infrastructure facilities in the Poltava region, using cruise missiles and strike drones simultaneously,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.
According to officials, several dozen drones targeted a gas transport facility, though the ministry did not specify which other sites were hit.

The Poltava region hosts Ukraine’s only oil refinery in Kremenchuk, a site repeatedly attacked by both drones and missiles since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Russia has long targeted Ukraine’s oil depots and fuel storage facilities, forcing Kyiv to rely entirely on imports—mainly from European countries—to meet its energy needs. Despite mounting evidence of civilian impact, Moscow continues to insist that it does not strike civilian infrastructure.
Earlier, Ukraine’s General Staff reported via Telegram on August 15 that strikes by the Defense Forces on Russian enterprises and infrastructure have reduced the Russian Federation’s revenues by an estimated $74 billion.
