Moldova and UK Sign Security Agreement in Response to Russian Threats
Moldova signed a security and defense partnership agreement with the United Kingdom, with the signing taking place during a visit by the UK and Romanian foreign ministers to Chișinău, the British government announced on November 20.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted the influx of Ukrainian refugees into Moldova since the onset of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
“Situated next to Ukraine, Moldovans feel the impact of Russian aggression, imperialism, and pressure daily,” Lammy stated.
The agreement aims to enhance cooperation between the two nations and bolster Moldova’s resilience against external threats.
According to the UK government, the partnership will not only support Moldova’s sovereignty and security but also reinforce Ukraine’s stability amidst Russian aggression.
Additionally, the UK pledged $2.5 million (£2 million) to strengthen Moldova’s cybersecurity defenses and $6.3 million (£5 million) to enhance its healthcare system, aiding refugee support efforts.
Earlier, Moldova enshrined the EU Membership path in its Constitution, following the October 20 referendum, where 50.35% of citizens voted in favor of pursuing European integration.
