Moldova Describes Energy Crisis in Transnistria as Part of Russia’s Broader Strategy
The Moldovan government has attributed the energy crisis in the Transnistrian region, triggered by the suspension of Russian gas supplies, to a larger strategy by Russia aimed at manipulation and propaganda.
According to Moldpres, government spokesperson Daniel Vodă highlighted the sharp deterioration of the energy situation in the region following Gazprom’s decision to halt gas deliveries.
“This energy crisis is more than an economic issue—it is a component of a broader Russian strategy designed to manipulate and propagate disinformation, instilling fear and dissatisfaction on both sides of the Dniester River,” Vodă stated.
He further noted that the crisis stemmed from the refusal of Transnistrian authorities to cooperate in the interest of the local population. Vodă also emphasized that the disruption of gas supplies and the ensuing energy crisis were accompanied by a surge in misinformation campaigns.
“Disinformation portrays the Moldovan government as responsible for the crisis on the left bank of the Dniester. Power outages are framed as deliberate actions by Chișinău to punish residents of Transnistria. This narrative omits repeated refusals by Transnistrian authorities to accept alternative solutions proposed by the Moldovan government,” Vodă explained.
He concluded by stating that “Russian propaganda is attempting to construct a narrative in which Moldova is depicted as a 'problematic actor' failing to address the crisis, despite clear solutions being offered to avert it.”
Earlier, Moldova announced it would cease electricity imports from the Russian-controlled Moldovan Thermal Power Plant in Transnistria starting January 1, 2025, as no new contract was reached. The government has developed alternative plans to meet energy needs, including domestic power generation, imports from Romania, and energy-saving measures to address potential shortages.
