Moscow Explosion Kills Two Russian Officers Accused of Torturing Ukrainian POWs

Two officers of Russia’s Interior Ministry were killed overnight on December 24 in Moscow, according to sources cited by Ukrinform in Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense on December 24.
The sources said the officers had previously taken part in Russia’s war against Ukraine and were allegedly involved in the torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

According to the account, the attack occurred at around 1 a.m., when a local resident approached a police vehicle parked near a police station and threw an explosive device into the car, causing a blast. The act was described as a protest against the Kremlin’s aggressive policies.
As a result of the explosion, two police officers were killed at the scene, while two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries, a military intelligence source said.

The intelligence sources added that the officers who were killed had served within Russian forces involved in combat operations against Ukraine and that there is evidence linking them to the mistreatment and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war, actions that violate the Geneva Conventions and the laws and customs of war.
Earlier, a garrison military court in Russian-occupied Donetsk handed prison sentences of up to 12 years to four Russian servicemen over the torture and killing of US citizen Russell Bentley in April 2024.
The servicemen encountered Bentley as he was preparing to film the aftermath of a missile strike in Donetsk. They allegedly demanded his documents, reported to their commanders that they had “identified a saboteur,” then placed a bag over his head and forced him into a vehicle.
